WOMEN’S INSTITUTES
Ashley.— Mrs Smith presided at the January meeting of the Ashley Women’s Institute. Birthday sprays were presented to several members. A picnic to be held in February was discussed. Mrs Cottle (Ohoka) demonstrated spray-making. The roll call was hints on bottling fruit. Miss Fairbrother was the winner of the monthly competition;, other competitions resulted as follows:—best bloom: Miss Fairbrother 1, Mrs Kennedy 2, Mrs Cook 3. Jar black current jam: Mrs Drake 1. Mrs Holland 2, Mrs Kennedy 3. Slice Christmas cake: Mrs Kennedy 1, Miss Fairbrother 2, Mrs Drake 3. Three table potatoes: Miss Fairbrother 1, Mrs Drake 2, Mrs Cossar* 3.
Killihchy.—Mrs G. Lemon presided over a good attendance of members at the monthly meeting of the Killinchy Women’s Institute. The president welcomed the visitors. Arrangements were made for a bus to go to Longbeach. The roll call was ' If fire occurred, name four articles you would take to safety." The wandering shilling was won by Mrs Boal. Mrs R. G. Martin (Leeston) gave an interesting demonstration of pressing flowers for cards and pictures, and was thanked by Mrs Boal. Competitions resulted as follows:—large bloom: Mrs M. Martin 1, Mrs K. Boon 2, Mrs J. Millar 3. Small bloom: Mrs K. Boon 1, Mrs K. Lemon 2, Mrs Boal and Mrs S. Lemon (equal) 3. Large cluster: Mrs J. Millar and Mrs M. Martin (equal) 1, Mrs J. Millar and Mrs M. Martin (equal) 3, Mrs K. Lemon 5. Small cluster: Mrs M. Martin 1, Mrs J- Millar and Mrs M. Martin (equal) 2, Mrs S. Lemon 4. Shrub: Mrs K. Lemon and Mrs M. Martin (equal) 1, Mrs S. Lemon 3, Mrs M. Martin and Mrs Boon (equal) 4. Raspberry jam: Mrs G. McClure 1, Mrs J. Boal 2, Mrs K. Lemon 3. Jam jar of blue flowers: Mrs J. C. Millar 1, Mrs M. Martin 2, Mrs S. Lemon 3. Christmas cake. Mrs Boon 1, Mrs K. Lemon 2, Mrs J. Millar and Mrs G. McClure (equal) 3. The hostesses were Mesdames L. C. Lemon, S. Lemon, and W. Kimber. Hornby.—The Hornby Women’s Institute held an afternoon social in honour of its president, Mrs E. B. Thompson, who will leave for England this week. Mrs Hill, vice-president, expressed the good wishes of the members to Mrs Thompson. Mrs Morrison presented Mrs Thompson with a floral spray and a leather handbag from the members. Songs were sung by Mrs Woodham .and Marie Pomare, and Mrs Ridout was the accompanist. Miss F. Hack danced a tap-dance, Mrs Morrison conducted competitions, v... > ■••*•**
