FOG ON LONDON AIRPORTS
COMPANIES SEEK USE OF FIDO (Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) LONDON, January 20. With fog continuing to ground airliners at the London airport and Northolt at an estimated cost of £60,000 a day, many airline executives are pressing for the installation of the war-time fog dispersal apparatus, Fido, states the ‘‘Daily Telegraph.” It has been the worst winter yet for air travel. The cancellation, delay, and diversion of aeroplanes has so far cost the companies about £1,000,000,” states the newspaper. “The cost of installing Fido on one runway at the London airport would be £250,000. The companies contend that the cost should be borne by the Ministry of Civil Aviation, which would be responsible for maintaining it, while the airlines would pay for its use in increased landing fees. “Fido. consists of long rows of tubes, in which there are tiny jets, on the sides of the runway. A mixture of petrol and paraffin is forced through the jets and ignited. The heat causes the fog to be dispelled over the runway. The cost of a single landing is estimated at £250.”
