48 Communists Arrested

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 9 p.m.) CAIRO, January 20. The Minister of National Guidance (Mr Fuad Galal) said today that 101 civilians, including 48 known Communists, were arrested in last week’s round-up.

This was in addition to the 25 Army officers arrested. Fourteen of the arrested civilians belonged to the Wafd Party and 39 others were suspected of having connexions with foreign elements interested in fomenting trouble in Egypt. Mr Galal refused to confirm or deny that the Wafdist leader, Mustafa Nahas, was under house arrest.
