ALLEGED SPYING AGAINST U.S.

TWO SOLDIERS PLEAD NOT GUILTY (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) WASHINGTON, January 19. Two former American soldiers, who were arrested in Vienna last weekend and flown to Washington, pleaded not guilty when charged today with spying as members of ah. espionage ring directed from the Soviet Embassy hqre. They were Otto Verber and Kurt Ponger, naturalised Americans of Austrian birth, who have been studying in Vienna under the former servicemen’s programme. Their trial was set down for March 2, and in the meantime they will be kept in custody in default of the 50,000 dollars bail each.

The grand jury indictment accused them of conspiring with Yuri Novikov, second secretary of the Soviet Embassy in Washington. Because of his diplomatic status Novikov could not be charged with them, but the United States demanded that he leave the country immediately. He left New York today in a Belgian aeroplane.
