YEARLING SALES AT TRENTHAM

3000GNS FOR COLT BY TIMANOVA PURCHASE BY OWNER OF DELTA (From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, January 20. Mr A. Basset, the wealthy Sydney owner, for whom Delta has won a fortune in stakes and betting, paid 3000 guineas for a magnificent colt by Timanova from Subdued on the second day of the national sale of yearlings at Trentham today. The colt was this year’s star entry from Mr G. M. Currie’s Koatanui Stud. The bidding on Mr Basset’s behalf was done .by Maurice McCarten, the leading Randwick trainer, who prepared Delta. The under-bidder for the colt was the Riccarton trainer, J. S. Shaw. The continued interest of the Australian buyers was again one of the features of today’s sales. Twenty-five yearlings worth 17,930 guineas were bought for Australia, three of them being at four-figure prices. With 13,570 guineas spent by Australian owners on the first day, the limit allowed by the Australian Government has almost been reached, and New Zealanders will have little competition on the third and final "day of the sale on Friday. Eighty-three yearlings changed hands today for 51,600 guineas, an average of 6211 guineas. This was less than the first day’s average, but that was expected. The main interest in the pre-lunch session today was in the first run from the Trelawney Stud’s draft. Without exception, the attractively-bred Trelawney youngsters were produced in splendid condition, and owners were able to bid with confidence. Ten Trelawney yearlings Changed hands at 8925 guineas, five of them at four-figure prices. Second highest price today was 2300 guineas paid by Mr L. A. Best, of Shannon, for an entry from Mrs G. A. Edponds’s Twyneham Stud, Hastings. This was a great colt by Timanova from the Nizami mare, Penny, a half-sister to the brilliant Surrey Gold. Like his successful relative, this colt should show great speed' as a two-year-old. The first produce of the great race mare Excellency, a filly, appeared today and brought top price for her sex. Pyne, Gould, Guinness, of Christchurch, as agents, paid 1250 guineas to secure this attractive chestnut, which was sired by Faux Tirage. The vendor was Mr W. T. Oliver, of Winton, in whose colours Excellency built up her great record. The climax to her career was her success in the New Zealand Cup.

There were two more purchases today for Mr J. Neil Watkins, of Montevideo, Uruguay. One was a colt by Foxbridge from Prudent in the Trelawney draft, which changed hands for 1300 guineas. Another Foxbridge colt in the same draft, this one from Lady Bertha, was sold to Mr Watkins for 1000 guineas. Sales at 200gns or more were:— Gns Account J. G.
