N.Z. Naval Officer To Ride In Escort LIEUTENANT J. I. QUINN SELECTED (From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, January 19. f Lieutenant J. I. Quinn, R.N.Z.N., of H.M.S. Black Prince, has been chosen from the Royal New Zealand Navy to ride in the Queen’s escort in the Coronation procession. It is expected that Lieutenant Quinn will ride a London police horse.
i Lieutenant Quinn was a member of a Royal Navy pentathlon team which competed successfully against the Royal Marines in September, 1950. He also represented the Royal Navy at the pentathlon championships of Great Britain in October. 1950, and May, 1952. In a letter applying for the privilege of riding in the Queen’s escort. Lieutenant Quinn said the equestian event in the pentathlon included a cross-country ride of 2000 metres, across jumps of varying difficulty and of Olympic standard. These in all cases he managed to negotiate with a minimum of faults for style, and without being dismounted. Lieutenant Quinn, who is aged 32, joined the Navy as a seaman boy in 1936. He was promoted to commissioned boatswain in 1948. and later that year was sent to England on courses. During these courses he was chosen to represent the Royal Navy in pentathlons. An officer from the Royal New Zealand Air Force and two from the Army will also ride in the Queen’s escort. The Air Force representative is not expected to be chosen until early in March. The names of the Army “representatives will be announced in February, when nominations for the Coronation contingent reach Army Headquarters from territorial and regular units.
