1956 OLYMPIC GAMES

ASSURANCE ON SITE IN MELBOURNE (Rec. 9 p.m.) MELBOURNE. Jan. IS. The Premier of Victoria (Mr J. Cain), who, on January 14, ordered a stoppage of work on the Olympic Games site, today gave an assurance that the games would be held in Melbourne in 1956. He said: “There is no doubt that the games will be held here, but the State Government wanted to know to what extent it would be committed financially. With millions of pounds worth of hospital and school works held up for want of funds, the State Government cannot be expected to give an open cheque for the games.” Mr Cain was referring to a warning by the vice-chairman of the International Olympic Committee (Mr Avery Brundage) that the games would have to be held elsewhere if there was much more delay in Melbourne. It has been announced in Canberra that the Prime Minister (Mr Menzies) will have early talks • with Mr Cain on finance for the games.
