NEW GRANDSTAND AT HAWERA
RAPID CONSTRUCTION OF £40,000 BUILDING (New Zealand Press Association) HAWERA, January 19. The construction of the new grandstand at the Hawera - racecourse, which was begun on December 27, is already about one-third completed. About 2000 tons of concrete have been poured and the rate of work during the 14 days is believed to constitute a record in the history of building construction in New Zealand. The ground floor construction is taking shape, and the boxing for the steel beams for the first tier of the double grandstand is already about 30ft above the ground. About 30 men have been working-some 10 hours a day in an all-out offort to get the stand ready for the next race meeting on February 21. The building, with two tiers of stands, will be 158 ft long, 50ft high and 48ft wide. It will cost about £40,000.
