ILLEGAL SALES OF EGGS
CASES REPORTED IN CHRISTCHURCH
ACTION BY MARKETING COMMITTEE
Measures to check illegal sales of eggs in the Christchurch marketing area will be taken soon by the National Egg Marketing Committee. In recent months several cases of black marketing have been brought to the notice of the committee. Under the Egg Marketing Regulations both retailers and poultry producers can be prosecuted for illegal sales.
“There is no restriction whatever on any poultry farmer selling eggs to consumers for their own use, providing delivery is made on the farm,” said the chairman of the committee (Mr G. McLatchie), when asked about the sale of eggs direct to the public and to retailers. “It is illegal, however, for any poultry-farmer to sell eggs to a - retailer in a marketing area such as Nelson, New Plymouth, Gisborne, Invercargill, Hamilton, Tauranga, Timaru, Palmerston North, Masterton, Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Hastings, Napier, Dunedin, and Whangarei. Likewise it is illegal for a retailer in any of these areas to purchase eggs direct from a producer for resale.”
Mr McLatchie said that steps were now being taken to investigate the selling of eggs other than through the recognised channels. He asked producers in their own interests, and for the sake of orderly marketing, to carry out their obligations to the industry and market their eggs according to the regulations.
