OTAGO WOOL SALE
98'D AGAIN PAID FOR MERINO
ALL LINES FIRM ON RECENT PRICES
(New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, Dec. 17. Spirited bidding from the outset marked the first Otago wool sale of the season today. Values for all lines appeared to be firm on rates ruling at recent sales, particularly for the finer wools, and in one or two instances there was an improvement. , .. Top price for the day was 98Jd per io for seven bales from Riobonwood of super and first AAA Merino, and 98d was realised for eight bales of super Merino ewe wool from Moutere, Central Otago. The higher figure equalled the best price at Timaru last week. A feature of the sale was the good quality of all classes of wool, particularly the finer sorts. The catalogue was made up from clips from all parts of the province, with some extra quality crossbred from the south.
Official Report The official report, issued by the Dunedin- Woolbrokers’ Association, the New Zealand Woolbuyers’ Association, and the New Zealand Wool Commission, states that at the first day of the Dunedin double sale there was an offering of 22,707 oaies from all parts of the province, but there were marked differences in condition caused by the adverse weather since lambing in certain districts, mainly in the coastal belt. Wools iron North Otago, Maniototo and Strath Taieri showed evidence of the near drought prevalent up to the late spring. Crossbred wools from the Gore and Tapa-, nui districts were the outstanding ones. The clips from the high country were of fine standard and quality. There were more buyers on the bencn than has been the case in recent years. Competition was well spread, with Bradford prominent for hogget wool and crossbred, while the Continent was keen tor skirtings and fine fleece. The local mills competed freely and outbid overseas buyers for specialty lines. Prices for haifbreds advanced on recent quotations, while crossbreds were steady. Pre-lamb shorn wools did not receive the same attention as wool shorn after lambing. A noticeable feature was that prices for fine medium and strong crossbreds did not show much divergence. The sale generally was above expectations. The range of prices was:— d. d. Merino, 60/64’s—
