CHINESE WOMAN FINED £30
ATTEMPT TO SMUGGLE GOLD JEWELLERY (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND. November 14. A Chinese woman who attempted to smuggle gold bangles, rings, pendants and watches was fined £3O in the Magistrate’s Court today. Mr L. G. H. Sinclair. S.M., was told by Mr Graham Speight, appearing for the Customs Department, that the woman, Mrs Lee Wong, was searched when she arrived by flying-boat at Mechanics Bay. Mrs Wong said she had nothing to declare, but Customs officers found she was wearing eight 24-carat gold bangles, seven 24-carat gold rings, two gold pendants and chains, and three wrist watches. The next day Mrs Wong said that some of the property was her own and some was for other Chinese in New Zealand. Some of the bangles had names and addresses in Chinese inscribed on them. The defence counsel. Mr R. Davison, said that language difficulty was probably responsible for some of the trouble. Mrs Wong could not speak English.
