Evidence On Role Of King Farouk CAIRO, November 11. The former King Farouk tried to hush up the Palestine arms scandal, according to Mohamed Azmy, the former Egyptian Prosecutor General. Azmy was giving evidence, in the Military Supreme Court today, on charges of desertion and other military offences preferred against Hussein Sirry Amer, former commanding officer of the frontier force. The arms scandal arose when the Egyptian Army, after the war with Israel, complained it was handicapped by inferior, defective arms. The Army alleged that Egyptian politicians made millions of pounds in corrupt dealings. Azmy said that among those who tried to persuade him on behalf of the King to shelve the arms case was Mohamed Kamel El Kawish, a former Governor of Cairo. In April, 1951, El Kawish arranged a meeting between Azmy and Mohamed Hassan, Farouk’s personal valet, who is now under arrest. Hassan told Azmy that the King wanted him to withdraw the request that Amer be committed for trial. Hassan explained that Amer enjoyed royal favours. Azmy said.
