fl -Social The old and permanently invalid are normally the responsibility of their next of kin, and, failing them, of the Hospital Board and Health Department Despite these official foster parents, however, the present shortage of suitable accommodation for the aged sick is a source of hardship and expense both to themselves and the community as a whole. Old people may suffer from mental or physical deterioration, or both. Some degree of mental confusion, with a particular tendency to wander, is not uncommon in the aged. In the past, if home or private care was found impossible, they could be admitted as a last resort to a mental institution. To-day, even this unhappy ending is denied them for want of room. In the general hospitals, the aged sick occupy for indefinite periods beds required for acute cases, hence restricting the admission of other patients. The wrong patient in the wrong bed is a luxury that few communities can afford. Yet our fathers had pointed the way. By 1910, special accommodation was already in existence for the care of 90 old and permanently invalid folk of both sexes, and for an equal number of frail ambulants. To-day, with the exception of two wards at Burwood Hospital, the accommodation for the chronic sick remains essentially the same, although the numbers of old have increased NINEFOLD. Where lies the fault? Has our social vigilance been dulled by this poppy of security, or are we not as good as our fathers? Issued by the Christchurch Aged Peoples' Welfare Council, P.O. Box 237.
