MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCE

SHORTAGE OF TEACHERS REPORTED

(New Zealand Press Association) OAMARU, November 11

Because of the shortage of science and mathematics teachers, it was suggested at a meeting of the Waitaki High Schools Board of Governors last evening that these subjects should be deleted from the curriculum at the Girls’ High School. The board, however, decided to make inquiries overseas with a view to rectifying the position.

The principal of the girls’ school (Miss M. K. Dunning) reported that because of the board’s inability to obtain teachers for science and mathematics she had had to take those subjects herself, and, apart from her administrative duties, was a full-time teacher. The chairman (Mr D. W. Meldrum) said the shortage of mathematics and science teachers was Dominion-wide. There was unlikely to be any improvement as there had been a falling-off in the numbers of women science graduates, while a number of mathematics teachers had been lost to industrial and scientific research.
