FLOWER SHOW
HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY AWARDS
The Canterbury Horticultural Society's annual show, held at the Show Grounds yesterday, was the most attractive staged by the society in' a long series of floral displays. The judge said that the display of cut flowers was the finest staged at any show in Christchurch for many years. Particular attention was directed to the classes for vases of six and 12 varieties.
A very popular feature and a highly attractive one. was the society's garden club competition, with entries from five Christchurch garden clubs and one from Ashburton. In conception and arrangement, these displays were of outstanding merit. The winning exhibit, from Halawell, had as its centre a pastel-striped counter. Flanking it were exhibitionquality Dutch irises and mauve-pink orchids, with clematis. A huge vase of white arum lilies and ar-rays from the tulip tree, were effectively used. Somerfleld was second with a Japanese garden, and Beckenham-Huntebury third. •'Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary.” was the theme of another garden club display, and the Ashburton exhibit featured a flowerdecorated bay window with a garden scene beyond, seen through a Venetian blind.
