AMPOL GOLF TOURNEY

OLIVER LEADS FIRST ROUND

(Rec. 11 p.m.) MELBOURNE. Nov. 12. The American golfer, Ed Oliver, led a field of more than 100 professionals and amateurs at the end of the first round of the Ampol tournament at the Yarra Yarra course today. It is the second of the Ampol tournaments this season. The first, in Svdney. went to the Australian star. Norman von Nida, after a play-off with Oliver. Oliver’s card of 69 today was four under the standard scratch score. Another American. Lloyd Mangrum, with von Nida and the amateur. Edward Wishart. are in second position. Leading scores were:— Oliver. 69; Mangrum, von Nida, Wishart, 70; J. Adams. L. Duffy, W. Clifford. S. Cowling, D. Cullen. 71: P. Thomson. O. Pickworth, K. Nagle. 72: J. Demaret. 73; J. Turnesa. 74. The New Zealander. A. Murray, is behind a big group with cards better than his 79. CRICKETER TO COME TO N.Z. (Rec. 8.30 p.m.) LONDON. Nov. 12. “New Zealand will gain a useful cricketer in the wicketkeeper-batsman, Eric Edrich, of Norfolk and Lancashire. who is emigrating to take up farming,” says the “Evening News.” “He is one of four brothers 4n firstclass cricket. The others are Billy, of Middlesex, George, of Lancashire and Brian, of Kent. They are sons of William Edrich, who still plays lor Buckinghamshire.”

Another other possible arrival is a test player, the West Indies wicketkeeper, Simpson Guillen, who played against New Zealand at Lancaster Park last summer. A most efficient wicket-keeper, he is also a delightfully unorthodox and fast-scoring batsman. No confirmation of his decision to come to Christchurch has so far been obtained, but the report is one current among Christchurch cricketers.

It is thought that both playerg, if they arrive, will play for West Christchurch.
