ST. ANDREW’S COLLEGE CADET CORPS

INSPECTION BY BRIGADIER J. T. BURROWS

“The military training you will later be called on to do is a service you are going to pay to your country for the good things handed down to you; military training is one way in which you can pay something back to your country,’’ said the Commander of the Southern Military District (Brigadier J. T. Burrows), when he inspected the St. Andrew’s College cadet corps yesterday afternoon. “The time will come when you will have to do your military training, and I feel that you should have the right attitude towards it.’’ he said. “Just as you find your schooling makes you into better citizens, so you will find that military training also makes you better citizens.’’

Brigadier Burrows congratulated the boys on “the impression you have made on me.’’ He was very impressed by their steadiness, especially the company containing the smallest cadets. He liked to see a boy who could talk to him and look him in the eye while doing so. He also congratulated the college pipe band on a “very impressive display.’’ Brigadier Burrows took the salute at a march past of the corps and inspected each platoon. He was accompanied by Lieutenant-Colonel J. A. Worsnop, Commander of Area 10. Southern Military District, Captain P. K. Rhind, Lieutenant E. H. Blair, commanding officer of the Sea Cadet Battalion. and Mr L. B. Stewart, rector of St. Andrew’s College. LieutenantCommander K. H. J. L. Phibbs, training officer for reserves and Sea Cadets in Christchurch, was also present.
