MR REWI ALLEY’S SPEECH
“GROSS INJUSTICE” IN REPORT
Mr L. C. J. Southon, Canterbury delegate to the Peking peace conference. last evening produced the verbatim record of a speech made at the conference by Mr Rewi Alley, which was reported in part from a broadcast heard in Invercargill. Mr Southon said that the extract published placed a completely unfair meaning on Mr Alley’s views. The paragraph, reported verbatim, said: “The second point I would like to make concerns the ability of the common man to fight for peace. Those who want to trap the ordinary people of all countries into war for profits always claim that the common man is too stupid and ignorant to produce his own leadership.” By beginning the quotation at “The common man is too stupid . . .” the report published in New Zealand did Mr Alley a gross injustice. Mr Southon said.
