“UNDERGROUND” IN BAVARIA
Minister’s Charge BERLIN, October 22. The Bavarian Minister of the Interior (Mr Wilhelm Hoegner) today revived the question of “underground groups backed by the United States’’ in Bavaria. Speaking at a press conference, he accused Federal Ministries of having furthered the formation of a paramilitary underground group in Bavaria. The Hamburg police today announced the arrest of another man accused of having been a member of a secret partisan organisation alleged to have been backed by the American authorities in Germany. He was the eighth person to be arrested in Germany. Both the Zinn and Hamburg authorities claimed that the groups, apart from anti-social guerrilla tasks set by the Americans, had, of their own accord, established liquidation lists of prominent Socialists and Communists. The American authorities have declared that they had no knowledge of this. A joint American-German commission has been at work for the last two weeks trying to establish if and how far American officers or officials were involved.
