SALVAGE CLAIM FOR £75,000
Harbour Board To Accept £12,500
STRANDING OF VIGGO HANSTEEN (New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, October 23.
The Otago Harbour has decided to settle its salvage claim against the Norwegian freighter Viggo Hansteen, which was stranded off Titoraki Point, some 20 miles south of Oamaru, on April 24 of this year, for £12,500. This was agreed at the adjourned monthly meeting of the board this afternoon after a discussion had been held in committee.
The board’s original claim was for £75,000, one-tenth of the value of the Viggo Hansteen and its cargo at the time of the stranding. The freighter was towed off a rock shelf by the harbour board’s tug Dunedin. The distribution of the claim was also discussed at the meeting, and the matter will come before the Supreme Court next Wednesday for the apportioning of the amounts between the interested parties.
