WOMEN’S CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS MISS M. HUGHES RETAINS AUCKLAND TITLE (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, October 23. Miss M. Hughes, of the Titirangi Club, retained her Auckland champion of champions title -n the 36-hole medal competition at the Titirangi golf course today. Miss Hughes had a lead of 6 strokes over the Manukau champion, Mrs T. Hood. Miss Hughes was the only competitor to score less than 80 for 13 holes. Her morning round of 77, four over par, was notable for a shaky start and a fine homeward half. In the afternoon, Miss Hughes scored 79, but she never appeared likely to be beaten. PROVINCIAL STROKE COMPETITION J. Mitchell (Avondale), G. G. Baker (Kaiapoi), and C. Haase (Avondale) won the gross stroke matches in three grades played by the Canterbury Provincial Golf Association last month. The competitors, from many parts of the province, played their rounds on their home courses, and their scores were converted to a common scratch score of 73.
