AUCKLAND WAR MEMORIAL
PROPOSALS TO SPEND £1,000,000 MUSEUM EXTENSIONS TO COST £440,000 (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, Oct. 23. War memorials to cost more than £1,000,000 are to be erected in and around Auckland. The boroughs and districts sponsoring the projects will be required to have their cash in hand by June, 1953, or forfeit the £ for £ subsidy which the Government will provide, up to a maximum of £50,000. Auckland city plans extensions costign £440,000 to its present War Memorial Museum. Of this sum, £120,000 has already been given, and is earning interest. The organisers estimate that the interest will eventually total £25,000. The Government has raised its subsidy ceiling in this instance, and will pay a £ for £ subsidy up to £162,500. ' ■ As a result, the organisers must raise only a further £90,000 to pay for the project. They will make a public appeal for this sum as soon as a permit for building is approved by the Minister of Works (Mr W. S. Goosman). The architects’ plans are sufficiently far advanced to enable tenders to be called, and the contract to be let immediately. Of the boroughs raising funds for memorials, few, if any. appear to have a chance of raising £50.000 by June in order to qualify for the maximum subsidy.
