ANZUS PACT
Sir,—lt may well be, as “The IJress stated, that “the Anzus Pact is a regional arrangement of a special character in which the United States, Australia, and New Zealand are partners,” but nevertheless, this setup is profoundly disturbing. As long as New Zealand remains a member .of the British Commonwealth of Nations there is not the slightest doubt that Britain, the senior member of it, should be represented at any defence negotiations initiated by either of her co-members with Powers outside this confederation. Again, in view of the inestimable benefits bestowed on us by Britain, it is not my intention to re-, main silent about the extraordinary treatment meted out to her. Therefore, although greatly appreciating our American cousins’ splendid gesture, it is my duty as a New Zealander to record the view that Britain should be given full representation forthwith — even if this means jettisoning this treaty.—Yours, etc., DOGWATCH.
