LEAGUE OF MOTHERS

INAUGURAL MEETING OF WOOLSTON BRANCH The inaugural meeting of the Woolston branch of the League of Mothers was held recently in the Methodist Hall. Woolston. Mrs W. Grant (provincial president) welcomed the Mayoress (Mrs R. M. Macfarlane) and representatives from various other branches. Congratulatory messages were received from Mrs Montgomery Spencer (Dominion president) and Mrs J. Forrester (of the Spreydon branch). An outline of the origin of the league was given by Mrs Grant, who also explained its aims and objects. Mrs J. Davidson (provincial secretary) explained the financial arrangements of the league, Mrs N. C. Clapp spoke on the magazine, and Mrs Grant described briefly how to conduct a creche. * Mrs Grant thanked Mesdames Aldous, Clapp, Gilmour. Hinchcliff, Luke. Ogiers, Reed, and Thomas, members of the organising committee, for the help they had given in forming the new branch. During the afternoon songs were sung by the Shirley branch choir, accompanied by Mrs D. Burn. Mrs D. M. Robinson (Bryndwr branch) and Mesdames J. G. Aldous and C. C. Porter (Papanui branch) cared for 15 children in the creche. Afternoon tea was served by members of the committee. The following officers were elected: acting-president, Mrs F. S. Gray; vicepresident, Mrs L. Graham; secretary. Mrs T. McGuigan; assistant-secretary, Mrs E. A. De Nicolo; treasurer. Mrs D. M. Cresswell; committee. Mesdames J. Gorman. W. McHarg, L. Reid, A. Wilson, and K. Wiltshire. JUNIOR RED CROSS The Junior Red Cross had been very busy during the last few months, said its organiser (Miss A. G. Merton) at a meeting of the Red Cross Society yesterday. A display of work done by members had aroused much interest in Christchurch, and through it valuable information had been given to parents and teachers who supported the children's activities. Recently members had sent 300 new garments and 100 good second-hand garments to the central depot, and also 37 cakes of soap, 450 toys 100 scrap books, 200 writing pads, and pencils to be sent to children in Italy. In addition, the Junior Red Cross had raised £45 for various good causes.
