GOLF

Alex Murray Wins With 293 H. BERWICK, 294, SECOND (New Zealand Press Association) WANGANUI, October 19. The new open golf champion of New Zealand is Alex. Murray, an unattached professional, of Auckland. At the end of the second round of the championship, Murray headed the 67 qualifiers with an aggregate score of 147. At Belmont, Wanganui, on Saturday, he returned cards of 71 and 75 in the third and fourth rounds respectively, and won the championship with a total of 293. Murray has been open champion on two former occasions—in 1935 and 1938.

The runner-up this year was H Berwick (New South Wales), who finished with an aggregate score of 294; Berwick qualified with an aggregate of 153 for the first two rounds, and on Saturday in the last two rounds scored 72 and «69. In third place in the championship was J. Coogan (Queensland) who after qualifying with 149, did rounds of 70 and 76 on Saturday. His aggregate was 295. Then came E. A. Southerden, the Napier professional, with 296; R Stevens (South Australia), and D. L. Woon (Hamilton), each with 298- J. F Collins (Wanganui), James Galloway (unattached professional), B. M. Silk (Wanganui), and W. D. AcklandHorman (South Australia), each with *99. The weather was good on Saturday —a bright sunny day, with a fair but not troublesofhe breeze. The greens and fairways at Belmont were in good order. The greens were faster than on any of the previous three days of the championships. Two Rounds of 69

Murray went out in the afternoon in 9 5 “ 37. He had a birdie 2 at the fifth hole.

There was a good deal of interest in the afternoon whether Coogan and Berwick would beat Murray, and so retain tor Australia the title won at Tit'rangi b < -Peter Thomson (Victoria), who did not defend the title this year. * afternoon round Coogan went out in 36, square with bogey, but he took w to rome home, against the standard score of 35. His putting was at fault. He £ Ore £. scr £ ci l until he reached the fifteenth hole, where he took 4 against the bo g e y 3. He failed badly at the 417-yard sixteenth. He hooked his mrve into long grass and did not recover. He took 6 against bogey 4. The mistake appeared to unfeettle him, and at each of the remaining holes he had to take one shot more than bogey. Coogan’s morning round of 70 could easily have been a 69. When he came to the last green his drive was excellent. His baH lay just outside the green, in fairly long grass. He used a putter, but failed to sink the putt, and so had to be content with a 70. Berwick’s Good Fourth Round

When Coogan failed to dislodge Murray from the lead, the crowd of about 2000 spectators turned their attention to Berwick. Berwick scored 72 in his morning round, aqd had a fighting chance of doing a 67 in the afternoon. This would have given him the title.

Berwick played a brilliant final nine holes. He returned a card of 69, two under the Belmont standard score. He went - out in 36, all square with bogey, and then returned the best inward score °f any player in the tournament—33, against' bogey 35. His card included two eagles—a 3 at the first hole (440 yards), and a 3 at the eleventh hole (521 yards). Berwick’s was the second eagle’ at the □2l-yard hole since the tournament began The first was achieved by N, V. Edwards (Titirangi) on Friday. Berwick was on to the green with his second, and sank a long putt. Berwick played the remaining holes out in bogey figures, and finished with a brilliant 69—the second such score so far at the tournament. Woon did 69 on Saturday afternoon, and revealed the form which won him. the amateur title last year. Woon qualified with 149, and was favourably placed when the third round started, but he did an 80 on Saturday morning. In the afternoon, he was in much better form. He went out in 35, one u ? < l? r the standard score. The highlight of the round was an eagle 3 at the 456yard fourteenth hole. He also had a birdie 4 at the first and a birdie 3 at me second, but was a stroke over at the fifth and the fifteenth. Southerden qualified with a total of 150. He did a morning round on Saturdav of 71—equal to the standard scratch. In” the afternoon he had to be content with a 70. He scored 38, two over the standard score, on the outward journey, and came nome in 37. His best effort in the round was a birdie 4 at the eleventh hole. Other members of the Australian amateur team, R. Stevens, amateur champion of Australia, and W. D. Ackland-Horman, did not attract any great interest in the fourth rouhd, because of their positions at the end of the third, but they finished well up.

Stevens did a morning round of 75, and scored 73 in the fourth round. AcklandHorman did a third round of 73, but took 74 in the fourth round. Detailed Results In the following results, an asterisk before a player’s name denotes that he is a professional:—
