RAILWAYMEN’S WAGES
CLAIMS BY UNIONS REJECTED • LONDON, October 7. Britain’s Railways Executive today rejected a claim by three railway unions to pay increases amounting to £22.500.000 a year. The three unions represent 455.000 men. They asked for a 10 per cent, rise for every man. The railways are the third big industry in Britain to. reject recent wage claims. Engineering employers have rejected a £2 a week demand by 3.000.000 workers, and the nationalised coalmines have refused to give a rise of £1 10s a week. Engineering and shipbuilding workers have threatened to impose a union ban on all overtime and piecework unless their demand is met. Today, further inconclusive meetings were held between representatives of the emoloyers and employees. Unless the engineering workers get an acceptable offer, an overtime ban will be enforced from October 20. If they carry out their threat, production will fall by a third, and armament production will be slowed down.
