MEXICAN PLAN FOR TRUCE

U.S. APPROVAL OF PRINCIPLE

(Rec. 8 p.m.) NEW YORK. October 7. The United States today welcomed the Mexican plan for the settlement of the long-drawn-out controversy over prisoners of war in Korea by granting asylum in United Nations countries to those unwilling to be repatriated.

United States acceptance does not mean an early solution of the problem, because the Communists are known to oppose the plan. Mr Warren Austin, the chief United States delegate to the United Nations, •aid in a letter to the United Nations Secretary-General (Mr Trygve Lie) that the Mexican suggestion could well Provide the answer to the dispute that had placed in a deadlock the Panmunjon truce talks. Commenting on the proposal, which was made some weeks ago by Mexico. Mr Austin said today: “The United States Government is pleased to note that this proposal is fully consistent with the basic principle on nonforcible repatriation, and believes the suggestion to be very useful.”
