LEAGUE OF MOTHERS
NEW BRANCH FORMED More than 100 women attended the inaugural meeting of the Ashburton branch of the League of Mothers, neia m St. Andrew s schoolroom, Ashburton. Mrs W. Grant (provincial president) welcomed the Mayoress (Mrs E. C. Bathurst) and about 50 representatives from various Christchurch branches. Congratulatory messages ■were received from the Mayoress of Christchurch (Mrs R. M. Macfarlane), Mrs Montgomery Spence (Dominion president), Mrs H. R. Hulme (hon. provincial vice-president), Mrs J. Davidson (provincial secretary), and from many branches throughout New Zealand. A brief history of the league since its inception was given by Mrs Grant, who also explained its aims and objects and spoke of the wonderful spirit of friendship which existed among members.
Mrs Grant explained the financial side of the league, and also told how a creche should be run in connexion with each branch. Mrs N. C. Clapp spoke on the magazine. The following officers were elec-ted:—acting-president, Mrs A. Miller, Hope; secretary, Mrs W. Haymes; treasurer, Mrs E. A. Cockroft; magazine secretary, Mrs D. Sparrow; creche convener, Mrs P. Cookson; choir leader, Mrs C. B. Gowans; committee, Mesdames S. Baird, Brown, C. J. Calder, L. A. Charles, M. J. Edmonds, D. J. D. Hickman, G. Lowry, A. Miller, W. Newlands, and C, Olds.
During, the afternoon songs were sung by the Spreydon branch choir, accompanied by Mrs J. Forrester. Mrs D. M. Robinson, Bryndwr branch, was in charge of the creche and she was assisted by Mesdames P. Cookson, A. Melrose, and Miss I. Campbell. Afternoon tea was served by members of the committee.
