FIRST DAY AT WESTPORT

MAGICAL AND PRIM LADY IN FAVOUR

Top weight of 9-0 may not stop Prim Lady from winning the Westport Hack Handicap, the first leg of the double on the opening day of the Westport Jockey Club’s meeting on Saturday, if the track is firm. Prim Lady, which will be ridden by C. C. Stokes, has raced once since she easily won over the same distance—one mile and a quarter—at Greymouth on August 30, That was at the Ashburton spring meeting, where she made up ground to finish eighth in the mile Penscroft Hack Handicap. A heavy or a soft track will bring Margaret Leigh and Elsie Mary, both Riccarton-trained gallopers, into favour. The last time these two had conditions to suit them was in the Redcliffs Hack Handicap at the Grand National meeting, and 'they were second and third respectively, behind Elsie Mary’s stablemate, Indian Scholar.

Balloch Prince won two races at Reefton. one of them over a mile and 150 yards, in which Fortement was the runner-up. Fortement filled the same Sosition behind Robbie in the open andieap later in the day. Fortement may be the better prospect over a mile and a quarter. At his place in the weights he will be hard to beat. The Riccarton-trained light-weights. Orontes and Tyro, should also give the race additional interest.

Tyro was an encouraging fifth in the Strathallan Hack Handicap, of one mile and 35 yards, at Washdyke last Saturday after being one of the .last away. It was only her second race for the season, and she should be still at the improving stage. Magical Overdue for Win

Magical had his last success so long ago that there must remain some doubt about his ability to return to it, but he has prospects of winning the Colvin Handicap, the second leg of the double. The class is weak, much more so than in the October Handicap at Wingatui on September 20, when Magical ran fifth. At his previous start, in the sprint at Ashburton, Magical was one of the leaders turning for home, and finished a fair eighth.

There will be fair support for Robbie, Vitalogy, Bowling Green, and possibly, Bonnie Charlie. x Robbie has had four races at West Coast meetings this season for two wins and two seconds. His consistency gives him sound prospects of filling one of the places. Vitalogy has failed in four starts this season, but he has been racing in strong company, and will appreciate the decline in class. He was partnered by Instinctive in one of the smartest sprints at Riccarton on Tuesday. Bonnie ■ Charlie had his first race of the season in the Timaru Challenge Stakes last Saturday. The class was much too strung for him, and he faded to last, but the benefit he got from the race, and the weaker class at Westport should be apparent on Saturday.

Bowling Green was narrowly beaten by Argonaut in the high-weight at Washdyke, and at her previous start was third in the Geraldine Cup. In her present form she should again be a prospect.
