RANGIORA COUNTY COUNCIL
NO SPEED RESTRICTION FOR CUST
“The settlement is not sufficiently built up to warrant speed limitations being imposed,” said the Commissioner of Transport (Mr G. L. Laurenson) in a reply to the Rangiora County Council’s request for speed restrictions at Cust Mr Laurenson’s letter was received at a meeting of the council yesterday. It had been found that in most Instances of small country settlements it was unreasonable to fix a hard and fast speed limit that necessarily applied at all times whatever the circumstances or conditions of traffic might be, said Mr Laurenson. In accordance with the suggestion of the Commissioner the council decided to erect notices marked “Reduce Speed” in parts of the township. Request From Catchment Board At the request of the North Canterbury Catchment Board Mr H. H. Petrie waited on the council to ask its co-operation in using shingle from the Cust and other riverbeds instead of from pits with the object of removing bottle necks which constituted flood danger points in the county. Mr Petrie claimed that shingle at the bottom of riverbeds was the equal of that taken from pits. He also stated that the co-operation asked for would do a lot towards reducing rates. The chairman (Mr C. W. Hurnrn) assured Mr Petrie that if it were possible to co-operate the council would do so. It was decided to refer to the council’s solicitor the question of taking legal action against the occupiers of certain premises at Waikuku Beach who had refused to make sanitary adjustments as required by the inspector. The clerk (Mr S. G. Dailey) informed the meeting that a new valuation of the county would take effect as from April 1 next. . Indications were that it would be considerably in excess of-present figures.
