HIGHWAYS BOARD MEMBERSHIP
REQUEST BY TRANSPORT ALLIANCE (New Zealand Press Association) WANGANUI, Oct. 6. “I think the answer would be for this industry to be represented on the Main Highways Board,” said the Commissioner of Transport (Mr G. L. Laurenson) at the annual conference of the New Zealand Road Transport Alliance to-day, when it was reported that the alliance was asking for a right of appeal in cases where it was considered that loading restrictions on a bridge should be lifted to permit carrying a greater load over it. “You are paying your share of the cost of bridge and road maintenance,” he added, “and I think you should have some say in how your money is to be spent. If you did have a right of appeal, I don’t see where it would get you. Should a county engineer be of the opinion that a bridge would break and fall down if loads exceeded, say. five tons and a half, I don’t see how any appeal would be successful in having the limit raised.” The alliance resolved that the Government be requested to grant to the transport industry as a right representation on the board and on any other similar bodies concerned with the construction and maintenance of main highways.
