AMBASSADOR TO WASHINGTON
Sir Roger Makins Appointed
LONDON, October 3. Sir Roger Makins, chief of the British Atomic Energy Committee, which guides the Cabinet on atomic poncy. has been appointed British Ambassador in Washington. He will replace Sir Oliver Franks, who has been Ambassador in Washington, since 1948. Sir Roger Makins’ connexion with atomic energy was revealed unobtrusively only a few weeks ago. For three years he has headed official committees on the Atomic Energy Council. Comprised of experts from the Treasury. the Foreign Oiffice, the pefence Ministry, and the Supply Ministry, it is believed to be this committee that administered the project which culminated ip the successful atom test on the Montebello islands. Sir Roger Makins, who will take up his Washington post early ir. January, is 48. He is married to the eldest daughter of the late Mr Dwight F, Davis, of St. Louis. Missouri, who geve tennis the Davis Cup. He has two sons and four daughters. Sir Roger Makins knows Washington well. In 1944 he was Britain’s Economic Minister there. He entered Lie Foreign Office in 1928.
