THE WEEK IN THE HOUSE
PARLIAMENT
Good Progress With Estimates THIRTY BILLS DISCUSSES (From Our parllamentarv genertee.) WELLINGTON, October » In a comparatively peaceful atmosphere, with few bickerings and dliputes, the House qf Repreaentetivte last week settled down. to busineu, and transacted a lot of it. There was e SQQd clearance of th® order paper. Thirty bills were dis. cussed, and a further 15 classes of Estimates, totalling £60,087,364, were approved. The total amount of ’Estimates approved by the House ig now £157.979,664. The only Estimates remaining te be passed are those of departments ad. WAt WWp fee Minister in charge af Foliae (Mr W. H. Fortune). Mr Fortune hag been ' absent overseas as leader of fee New Zealand delegation to the Commonwealth parliamentary Aasodationb conference. He will return to the House this week. It is probable that all the remainjni Estimates will be approved this week, and the House will be free theri to discuss legislation in the closing weeks of the session. However, the Prime Minister (Mr Holland) has promised the House an opportunity of discussing papers consideration—annual reports and re» turns. Now that members have fewer opportunities of discussing Ministers’ I replies to their questions—-Govern ment business has been given precedence—there are fewer questioae asked; and one day last week only one member rose at Question time.
