FIRE GUTS WING OF HOSPITAL
MALE NURSES LOSE BELONGINGS (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, October 5. Fire swept through a wing of the Cornwall Hospital, the male nurses’ quarters, at 12.57 a.m. on Saturday. Right of the 11 rooms in the wing, which is constructed of wood and cement board, wer© gutted. Ten elderly women in an adjoining geriatric ward were evacuated as a precaution. The fire brigade was able to prevent the flames from spreading to the main corridor of the building. A fireman. Mr P. Elmore, had his left hand badly cut by glass, and was treated at fee Green Lane Hospital. Five of the gutted rooms in the male nurses’ quarters were occupied. Most of the men dressed hurriedly, but one of them. Mr Lawrence Rankin, had to dash out clad only in his pyjamas. They all lost everything ©lse feev: possessed. A Newmarket outfitter offered to supply the men with clothes without charge until they were able to pay him, and the staff opened a subscription list.
