ST. BEDE’S COLLEGE SPORTS YOUNG RUNNERS SHOW PROMISE The senior events decided at the thirtythird annual sports of St. Bede’s College on Saturday revealed little outstanding talent, and although a strong wind assisted the runners in sprint events, times were well outside the records. J. Noonan was the outstanding performer with wins in the 100 yards, 220 yards, 440 yards, and 120 yards hurdles, with a second placing i in the half-mile. A. Lamont and M. McGifford, who filled the minor places, were no match for Noonan in the sprints. Although the college may be below standard in the quality of its senior athletes, there is promise in the intermediates and juniors, some of whom appear equal to the seniors. A. Tracy, a son of a very well-known Wellington runner of 30 years ago, showed himself up as a likely winner at the secondary schools' sports next month by winning the halfmile in 2min 8 3-ssec, time which displaced the previous record of 2min 11 3-ssec made in 1946. He was also second in the 220 yards to a fine young runner mP. Stevenson in 22 4-ssec, which is only a fifth of a second slower than the record made by R. F. Warren in 1946. Stevenson also won the 100 yards in 10 4-ssec against the record time of 10 3-ssec, also established by Warren. Tracy also won the 440 yards, beating Stevenson in a we 1judged race. Stevenson’s performance in winning the 120 yards hurdies in 16 l-ssec beat the record of lb 3-ssec he established last year. Another record was made when R. Staniford won the mile in 4min 53sec, displacing the 4min 59sec recorded by J. E. Maybury in 1945. The juniors were of uniformly good class, particularly good form being shown by S. Laffey, B. Gardiner, P. O’Brien, and M. Shaw. St. Bede’s College may have a coming champion in the 13-year-old M. Lee, whose records of Usee for 100 yards and 24 2-ssec for 220 yards were disallowed because of the advantage gained by a following wind. Although no record is kept for 440 yards, his effort in winning the distance in 59sec was a praiseworthy one. It was four-fifths of a second faster than the time registered by the juniors for the same distance. Lee’s father, T. H. Lee, was one of the sensational secondary schools boy -runners of 1923 and 1924, and still holds the St. Bede’s College record of lOsec for 100 yards. He is also co-holder of the secondary schools junior record of llsec. Young Lee has plenty of size and a style that will develop with coaching.
