ENTRIES IN TRADES EXAMINATIONS

MORE THAN 3000 RECEIVED

More than 3000 entries have been received for this year’s trades examinations, according to a statement made recently by the chairman of the New Zealand Trades Certification Board (Mr E. Caradus). This is double the number of entries received in 1949, the first year of the board’s operations. Of the total of 3154 candidates, cabinet-making, coach-building, painting and decorating, signwriting and shipbuilding accounted for 105. The remaining 3049. are distributed over the following trades: motor mechanics (1238), carpentry and joinery X 700), electrical trade (372), fitting, turning, and machining (309), plumbing (306), automotive electricity (58), tractor mechanics (29), automotive machining (24), motor-cycle mechanics (13).

Mr Caradus said that the present candidates were being drawn from an apprentice group born in or about 1935. a year in which the total number of births in New,Zealand was less than half the present figure. In future years, Mr Caradus considered, the work of the board would be greatly increased
