DETERMINATION OF WHEAT COSTS
The findings of the Wheat Costs Committee which met some weeks ago are now in the hands of the Government. Consisting of representatives of united wheatgrowers, Federated Farmers, the Department of Agriculture and the Treasury, the committee meets at least once a year to determine any variation in the costs of production of wheat. It has been the practice of the Government, up to the present, to rebate these extra costs of production to the farmer by making a relative increase in the fixed price payable to him for his wheat. In these days of mounting costs, it may be regarded as safe to assume that the committee has re-
commended an additional payment to the grower covering the 1952-53 harvest, the basic price for which is in any case, to be increased by Is a bushel. It is to be hoped that an announcement embodying the acceptance of the committee’s findings will be made in ample time to influence the sowings in next autumn.
