“THE STORY OF LYTTELTON”
Sir,—l appreciate the interest of Mr Langford and his committee in my forthcoming book about Lyttelton. It is regrettable that the impossibly high standards of the Centennial History Committee, encountered by other authors besides myself, made it useless to delay publication further by seeking a grant from the committee. However, the book was not written for monetary reward and I am grateful to the Lyttelton Borough Council for going ahead with its publication. It was written mainly for the people of Lyttelton, past and present, who will, I trust, not look a pift horse in the mouth, though. I feel sure, as Mr Trim says, they will get a very interesting story at a moderate price—if not a learned history of an academic nature. However, I and the borough council will welcome a subsidy from the centennial committee if a good reception calls for it—Yours, etc., THE AUTHOR. September 26, 1952.
