ALAN J. MCGILLIVRAY, / Car Exchange Service, 100 Oxford . tee. Elsoms Service Station. ’Phone 35-683. ; Offers as an item of interest, how a car became known as an “AUTOMOBILE.’’ Way back in the year 1894 a prominent engineer journalist, employed on the staff ’ of a well-known Chicago newspaper, persuaded the owner to offer 5000 dollars’ ;? prize money for a road race for the 0 "Horseless Carriage.” 5 In writing up the big event, the reporter was handicapped for an appropriate name 5 for these new machine chariots. 5 “Horseless Carriage” proved unwieldy, while motor-vehicle had a thoroughly uti- > litarian sound considered improper for the snorting racers of the day. 5 To create even greater enthusiasm in the road race, an additional prize was of5 fered for the best name submitted for the 3 new contraptions. Hundreds of names were offered. Names such as Goalone, quadricycle, autocycle, 0 Petrocar, Automotor, and Motorcycle. The prize money was eventually shared 5 by three people submitting the name 5 Motocycle. Opposition newspapers scorned such an 5 atrocious name, pointing out that the 5 machine buggies held ho resemblance to 5 a bicycle in any way. 5 Horseless Carriage and Gasoline or Steam Carriage became every day words, with Motocycle added. . Then out of the blue, the heated Argument was brought to an end. In far-away France the Frenqh Academy 2 had Invented a new word for all mechanical machines, and this word was, and still is: “AUTOMOBILE.” It may be of interest to readers to know more of the road race mentioned above. Contestants were given one year to pre- . pare for the titanic struggle, of banging juggernauts. Inventors of all kinds started building their entries, and what a conglomeration of nominations were received. Some, were built to run on carbonic » acid, acetylene gas, compressed air, liquid air. electric batteries, steam, and some long-haired inventors endeavoured to use steel springs. In all 85 final nominations were received . for the 92-mile race. As time went by many entries fell by . the wayside, until it was feared there would be no starters at all. On the eve of the great day a heavy snowstorm upset all calculations, and of the 12 final acceptors for the race, onlysix were able to reach the starting barrier under their own power, the others being pulled into place by drays. The signal to start was sounded. Terrific bangs, clouds of’steam and undreamed-of smells were ail welded into the air to-

gether. Of the 12 starters, seven only moved off under various means of power. Two battery cars left the mark and continued for about a half mile, where one subsided in a vivid electrical display, while the other thundered on for a good 100 yards, where it gave up the ghost. >■ Of the other five, only two completed the journey. The winner’s margin being 5 hours, with an average speed of slightly over 5 m.p.h. The promoters of the race .declared it a tremendous success, and that the future of the "motocycle” was assured. The opposition newspaper chuckled derisively. and announced the ‘'Horseless Carriage” to be a complete and dismal failure. Watch out for further "Items of Interest” by alan j. McGillivray.
