INTOXICATED DRIVER IMPRISONED
(From Our Own Reporter) WAIM ATE, September 26. •Unless there are very exceptional
circumstances, imprisonment is the proper punishment” said Mr E. A. L«e, S.M., in the Waimate Magistrate’s Court this afternoon, when sentencin’* John Leslie Keen, aged 23. a concrete moulder, of Dunedin (Mr N. L. Knell), to seven days’ imprisonment on a charge of being found intoxicated in charge of a motor-car. Hn driving licence was cancelled for 12 months. Evidence was given that as a _esult of a complaint. Keen was taken' in charge by Traffic Officer R. L. Lark oh the main highway near Hook about 11.30 p.m. on September 19. After hearing evidence the Magistrate said that Keen’s counsel had said everything that could be said on his behalf. It was a tragic business for a young man of character to be charged with such an offence. “There are so many serious accidents resulting in injury or death following the driving of cars after having consumed liquor, and somehow or other this gjctice has to be restricted,” said
