GRAIN AND PRODUCE MARKETS

(By Our Commercial JEdtear.) The snowstorm which passed over t great part of the South Island this week provided welcome relief to soils which were unseasonably parched. It ht* ea. abled spring sowing to be pushed oh in many areas and has greatly improved the prospects of next season's crops, both those already in the ground and thOM about to be sown.

Seed markets are generally firm but inactive. Some overseas buyers havt come forward for red clover, but th» volume of this business done in the hM week was small. Overseas inquiry for ryegrass has tan limited this season, so that Canterbury growers may be said to have ehostn a good year to have a disappointing erep. Growers in Otago have produced aom* good lines, but even with the greatly re* duced offering of good seed from Can* terbury, merchants have not been keen to stock any but the highest germinating lil ßetail tradb has been light this sprint, but merchants anticipated a good turnover before the end of the sowing leason. A large area is under the plough, and i| is not unlikely that small seed sowing*, as well as cereal sowings, will be sub* stantial, compared with recent years. September » Sufficient stocks of table potatoes art on hand to meet all TN recent importations from Tasmapta should be ample to make Up the shortage « locally-grown supplies. There is still •» odd truck or two of table potatoes owing to hand from Canterbury. It in to® .early yet to estimate the area that will be planted in potatoes in Otago this yew, but the extra price to be given next year may induce growers to increase their acreage under this crop. The sowing of wheat for the year b now practically completed, and report* all point to an added acreage of tsb cereal. The only demand for oate is for seed line* for apring Bowing. There i» very little inquiry from the North Island and merchants there appear to have ample stocks on hand. There has been 1 complete elMttfi* partridge peas. The very high priW ruling over the last few months havt been sufficiently attractive to induce merchants and grower* to dispo*e of all the! had on hand. Bradford Tops.^Merino: TO’*. fiJ’B. 56’4. S
