BUTTER AND TOWN MILK
Increased Subsidies Necessary
HIGHER PAYMENTS TO PRODUCERS (From Our Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, August 31. There will be no increases in the retail prices of butter and towh milk supplies as a result of the increased guaranteed price for butterfat. The Government will maintain the present retail price of butter by increasing the subsidy at a cost of approximately an extra £500,000. A similar increase in the subsidy will be necessary to maintain the present town milk supply price, and the cost, may be slightly more than that for butter. A fairly clear indication that any future increases will have to be met jy the consumer has been given by the Government. The Budget showed that £16,000,000 had been set aside for subsidies, and it was stated that the figure would not be exceeded. There will be some non-recurring commitments—subsidies on tallow, to the timber industry, and to complete payment under the wool subsidy arrangement—but the increases In the subsidies on butter and milk will completely absorb any saving on those
