ENGLISH CUP MATCHES SHAMROCK BEATEN BY THISTLE The Canterbury Football Association’s English Gup knock-out competition was begun on Saturday afternoon when tyro games were played. At English Park, Thistle beat Shamrock by -6 goals to 3, and at St. Albans Park better finish gave Rangers a win by the odd goal in nine over Atlantis. The only championship match played was between Technical Old Boys and Christchurch City, and resulted in a win for the former by 9 goals to 2. Results:— ■ English Cap Thistle 6, Shamrock 3. Bangers 5, Atlantis 4. Hurley Shield Technical 9, Christchurch City I. TECHNICAL v. CHRISTCHURCH CITY What was considered to be a key match in the championship was a disappointment. Technical met Christchurch City at English Park. Technical was superior in all departments and the score of 9 goals to 2 was a fair indication of the merits of the teams. The City team was prominent only in the first 20 minutes when it looked as though the side might make a game of it. At this stage some opportunist goals by Technical took the starch out of the City side, and from then on semi -individuad moves were the order of the day. The Technical display was up to representative standard. Perfect passing and positional play gave a constant territorial advantage, and in Logan, de Veer, and Gardenbrock the side possessed the right material to finish ott the movements. Christchurch City lias given attractive displays this season, and looked like taking a share in the championship, but in recent matches its combined efforts have been far from convinclng. A. M. de Veer (4), A. Gardenbrock (3), •"<} “S2f e ? ior Technical, ■“d M. Wild (2) for Christchurch City. Referee: Mr T. Mathie. THISTLE v. SHAMROCK .The first half of the match between Thistle and Shamrock was very even. Shamrock’s failure to cap its scoring chances was the main reason for Thistle's *® ac * 3 goal ? t 0 2 - After interval, Thistles superiority in the scoring positions put the issue beyond’doubt in spite of a spirited resistance. Halfway tnrough the second spell the Shamrock mid-field players slowed down on recovery. Codling a ’\% , 9 n ? s once m ore were the pick of a solid defence, with J. McGrath as a very reliable link between halves and forwards. T. Methven, the New Zealand and Air Force player, was the other inside man and gave promise of showing his true calibre as he improved his knowledge of his outside players. J. Gordon and R. Clarke carried practically all the spearhead thrust. Although beaten, Shamrock gave a ver? satisfactory display. The inclusion o’, three 'excellent* juniors, P. Flynn, P. Fletcher, and B. Newsome, has proved a worthwhile experiment in recent matches. R. Clarke (4). R. Codling, and J. McGrath scored for Thistle, and P. Fletcher B. Newsome, and E. Field for Shamrock Referee: Mr T. Billcliff. RANGERS v. ATLANTIS *

Maying on an atrocious ground at St Albans Park, Rangers eliminated Atlantis from the English Cup knock-out by the odd goal in seven. The game was evenly contested. Rangers owing its win to better marksmanship. In spite of the heavy ground, both teams staged some good combined thrusts, which fully tested the defences. Atlantis missed Cavanagh badly, and this meant some reorganisation at the expense of the attack. Townshend, Clarkson, and Ayres were prominent both on defence and initiating attacks for Atlantis, and 3. Green and R. Fleming were the most reliable in pressing them home. As usual, D. Head played an outstanding game at centre forward for Rangers, and with two useful wingers in D. Cotton and A. Smitheram' fully tested the Atlantis defence. Planicka. Vichus. and Cook were all prominent in the midfield positions for Rangers, and M. Friedberg in goal shaded his opposite number.

D. Head (2). D. Cotton, A. Smitheram, and A. Housler scored for Rangers and R. McFarlane (2), R. Fleming, and J. Green for Atlantis, Referee: Mr P. Consedine. SENIOR RESERVE
