CUT IN D.S.I.R. VOTE

ORC H ARDIS TS PROTEST (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 21. Because of the reduction in the grant made to the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, orchards under the research survey might have to close, it was said at the annual conference of the New Zealand Fruitgrowers’ Federation to-day. The conference protested against the cut. Mr C. G. McMurry fNelson) said the I cut was 10 per cent., but increased wages might bring it to 12 per cent. The research orchard at Nelson, one of the show orchards of the Dominion, sold its fruit at high prices, but the proceeds went to the Consolidated Fund, instead of being credited to the research funds. This season the fruit would go direct to a processing plant, in which event the loss a plot would be anything from £lOOO to £l5OO.
