URANIUM IN AUSTRALIA

REFINERY MAY BE BUILT CANBERRA, Aug. 19. A uranium refinery will almost certainly be built in the Northern Territory. according to a Government spokesman. He said that uranium from the Territory would be refined in Australia, probably in the Territory itself. It is expected that a private company will carry out the refining into concentrates. The new uranium, ore discoveries have not been proved, and until they are the Government is adopting a conservative attitude. It is believed to be concerned at the optimistic nature of some unofficial estimates and has counselled caution, In Darwin, the Administrator of the Northern Territory (Mr F. J. Wise) announced last night that the lode of uranium ore at Edith River has been traced three miles, in’ which distance there are outcrops of radio-active minerals, all of which give a strong reaction to geiger counters.
