TRACK WORK AT ADDINGTON

PLEASING EFFORT BY MORANO Useful efforts by Morano, Gay Belwin and Maori Home were the features of track worki at Addington yesterday morning. AH the work was done about 18 feet but from .the rails, and the going was dead. Most of the horses were restricted to easy tasks with a sprint over the final quarter. Yesterday was the first occasion that most of the horses have had any serious work for about a fortnight, and their preparations for the opening day of the Grand National meeting have been seriously interrupted. Morano made the pace and was shading Adorian at the snd of an easy mile and a half in 3min 21 3-ssec, the last foUr furlongs in imin 4sec. Both horses were running on solidly, and they should be in good order on Saturday. Morano looks to have developed considerably since last he raced in Canterbury, and he should have a good season. Adorian will be having his most serious test to date in the Lightning Free-for-all on Saturday. The Springfield Globe five-year-old has recorded better than 2min 38sec for one mile and a quarter at Addington, and he will not be out of his class. His reliability at the barrier will be an advantage, and he will have an outside chance. Gay Belwin, the pacemaker, was shading Lady Rowan at the end of their mile and a half in 3min 30 2-ssec, the first mile in 2min 21 4-ssec and the last quarter in 32 2-ssec. Lady Rowan suffered a bad gash on her chest recently and had to be eased m her work. She has made a good recovery and may not be long returning to her best Gay Belwin worked with rare dash, and he will be fit on Saturday. Chamfer and Denbry finished ahead of Pierre at the end of their mile and a half in 3min 26 2-ssec. The firstnamed pair were running on well after completing their last half in Imin 3 2- Denbry is expected to make a good start for the season in the Ribbonwood Handicap on Saturday. Maori Home’s Fast Sprint Maori Home worked quietly over the first mile and a half of two miles, but he was sprinted over the final four furlongs in Imin Isec, an outstanding effort considering the extra grdund he covered. He completed the full distance in 4min 46 l-ssec. Maori Home looks well, but he is set a difficult task from the second Itne in the Lightning Free-for-all on Saturday. Blue Print and Zulu worked over one mile and a half in 3min 36 l-ssec, the last four furlongs in Imin 8 4-ssec arid the last quarter in 32sec. Zulu looks well and may be given a run on the second day at Addington. Single Task was finishing on better than Sure Charge at the end of one mile and a half in 3min 31 2-ssec, the final four furlongs in Imin 4 3-ssec. They will form a popular bracket with Gay Belwin in the Christchurch Handicap at Addington on Saturday. Good Review pulled hard through his run over two miles, the last, mile and ai quarter in 2mln 57sec and the last half in imin 6ssc. He is in good order. Star Rosii in Form Star Rosa, which will probably be One of the favourites for the August Hanai-* cap on Saturday, finished on slightly better than Sea Rover and Blue Mist at the end of one mile and a half in 3‘min 24 4-ssec, the last four furlongs in Imin 3 3- Blue Mist gave the other pair 3sec start, and she was doing her oest at the finish. She should benefit from the run and prove hard to beat in the Louisson Handicap on Saturday. Fair Isle made the pace and finished in front of Green Label and Lindy Lou at the end of one mile and a quarter in 2min 53 l-ssec, the last half-mile ih Imin 5 l-ssec. The winner of four races last season, Fair Isle will not be out of her depth in the Christchurch Handicap on Saturday. Distant Star finished on well to be on terms with' Parrish Mills at the end of two miles in 4min 53 2-ssec, the last four furlongs in Imin 4 4-ssec, and the last quarter in 31sec. Flicka Boy made the pace, but broke at the furlong. It was a most impressive effort on the part of Distant Star, a candidate for the Canterbury Three-year-old Stakes on Saturday. The Sir Michael gelding looks as though he will develop good winning form this season. He is a half-brother bv Sir Michael to a winner last season in False Gift. He is owned and trained at Addington by L. G. Tisch. Useful Effort

Black Douglas trailed Trixie Milne throughout an easy run over one mile and a half in 3min 38sec, the last four furlongs in Imin 7 l-ssec. Black Douglas looks to have improved considerably in the last few weeks, and it will not surprise if he makes a bold showing in the Canterbury Three-year-old Stakes. Goldship and County Antrim were running on solidly at the end of airi easy two miles, the last four furlongs In Imin 5 3-ssec. County Antrim looks to be returning to his best. Indomitable, Warren Grattan, and Bronzette were let off with an easy mile and a half at about a 2min 30sec gait. All three have done well during the winter and they will probably resume racing at the New Brighton Trotting Club's meeting on September 6. Flagship, which is carrying a lot of condition, was given easy pace work without hopples. He is still showing signs of the soreness which troubled him last season. From Frankton Although there was not much pace on at any stage of the race, the Franktonowned and trained Whispering Smitn won the Spring Handicap, the main event at the Manawatu Trotting Club's meeting on Saturday, too easily for any excuses to be made for the others. F. Smith took Whispering Smith to the front soon after the start, and slowed the field down to a crawl over the first mile and a half. The Peter Smith four-year-old waited on the others until inside the last 100 yards when he sprinted away from Tashkent to win by a length. Jimmy Carlton finished on from an awkward position at the straight entrance to take third place from San Jose, Live Wire, and the disappointing favourite, Melvruse. Whispering Smith proved one of the best horses of his age in the North Island last season, and in 14 starts he had two wins and seven placings. He is out of a non-stud book mare in Our Peggy, by Our Thorpe from Flora Elmo.
