CHRISTCHURCH PLACE NAMES

Sir,—ln the article, “Some Christchurch Place Names” on August 16. Mr H. A. H. Insull has been unable to trace the origin of Burwood. In conversation with an .older generation at the Burwood school jubilee in 1947, it was said that New Brighton used to include Burwood. It was stated that the alteration to the name was brought about by a Mr George King, an early resident in the district. Mr King s old home was burnt down some years ago. It was also said Burwood was the district place name in England where Mr King came fromMr King had quite a show place at Burwood. I could understand the above being correct and worth looking into.—Yours, etc., a 4. BLISS. August 16, 1952.
