UNIVERSITIES’ TOURNEY

OPENING MATCHES PLAYED COMPETITIONS TO FINISH ON THURSDAY Conditions were good for the opening rounds of the New Zealand Universities* winter tournament, which began in Christchurch yesterday. The main attraction of the day was the hockey match between the New Zealand Universities* team and the touring Australian team, Australia winning by 1 goal to 0, in the last few minutes of play. More than 400 competitors are taking part in the tournament. Fencing finals gave the following points: Otago 6, Canterbury 3, VicCompetitors were welcomed by the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr R. M. Macfarlane, M.P.) on Sunday afternoon, in the Canterbury University College Hall. The president of the Canterbury University College Students’ Association (Mr D. W. Stewart) an% the president of the New Zealand University Students’ Association (Mr R. S. Milne) also welcomed the visitors. Canterbury proved superior to the holder, Otago, in the first round of the Association football competition. The game, which Canterbury won 8-0. was fast and constructive, with the Canterbury forwards showing excellent ball control, combination and positional play. Although the Otago attack lacked sting, their heading was of a high standard. Otago’s play generally lacked the finesse showed b y Canterbury. Goals were scored by Sukplski (4), Freenstra (3) and Craighead. , In „. the Victoria-Massey game, won by Victoria 2-0, Victoria had a territorial advantage, but strong defence, mainly by R. Solernou and W. Candler (Massey) managed ;to hold the attack. Aldridge and Preston were the most impressive of the Victoria forwards. Goals were scored by Millward and Preston. Aimless kicking and poor positional play, in rather a ragged game, was compensated only by the ruggd enthusiasm pf both teams in the Lin-coln-Auckland game. Auckland won Rainey, Rosser and Hard played well, and Rogers was ys Mackay (centrehalf) was always prominent for Lin. coin, ana Nelson played a sound game as goal-keeper. For Auckland, Dohig and. R.
