Opera House to be Closed

Because ratepayers had rejected a loan proposal for £53,000 to strengthen and renovate the municipally-owned Opera House, the Palmerston North City Council at a special meeting last night decided to close the building, erected m 1904 at a cost of £19,000? The Opera House seated 1040, and had the largest stage in New Zealand. Recently defects were discovered in the structure, and architects and engineers condemned the building. Proposals for reopening the Opera House will be placed before the ratepayers if the sanction of the Local Government Loans Board is obtained.—(P.A.)
