RUGBY LEAGUE WELLINGTON BEATS CANTERBURY
NORTHERN UNION CUP MATCH
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 17. Wellington retained the Northern Union Cup with a 20-8 win over the Canterbury Rugby League team at Wellington on Saturday. Very little constructive play was possible because of the heavy ground and driving rain. Canterbury held a territorial advantage till the last 20 minutes when the Wellington forwards took charge of the game. The visiting backs, faster and more penetrative than their opposites, found many gaps ih the Wellington back-line, but through faulty handling and sound defensive play by the home side’s full-back, K. Ropata, could not capitalise on their openings. A. Atkinson was in grand form ip the Canterbury pack, and several times beat the opposition with strong runs. On one occasion he raced 65 yards down the side-line-to score. For Canterbury, R. Wilson and A. Atkinson scored, tries, C. Paskell converting one. C. Mailinder, J. Scott, H. Kreyl and T. Anquentil scored for Wellington. K. Ropata converting four and kicking a penalty goal.
